Meet the new AdSense user interface

Editor's Note: This post was originally published in October 2016 and has been updated with the most recent product announcement.

Over the coming weeks, when you log in to your AdSense account, you'll be automatically taken to the new User Interface (UI). You will no longer be able to opt-out of the new UI.

Thank you to the more than 500,000 publishers who switched to the new UI over the last few months. Your feedback has been invaluable in launching the new UI to all of our users.

The new AdSense user interface (UI) is here. Over the last year, our product team has been hard at work bringing Material Design principles to AdSense. This new UI highlights the information that’s relevant to you on a personalized homepage and streamlines navigation.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be offering the new UI to AdSense publishers.  All you’ll need to do is opt in when you log in to AdSense:

What’s new?

  • A fresh new look & feel. We're adopting Material Design principles with a completely redesigned homepage and menu. We’ll roll out further improvements throughout the product soon.
  • A great new homepage. All the information you need, right where you need it. We've organized your homepage into a stream of interactive cards. You can pin your favorites to the top of the stream, and arrange your homepage just the way you’d like.
  • A streamlined new menu. We’ve brought everything together in a new left hand menu.

We’ll continue to improve and refine AdSense over the coming months. While we’re making these improvements, you’ll still be able to find all the content and features that you’re used to–right where you expect them.

Opt in through the AdSense interface to try it for yourself, and let us know what you think in the feedback tool.

Five useful ways to check your AdSense performance

Sometimes it's a good thing to step back and look at the basics.

With that in mind (and with the new AdSense interface now in place), we'd like to recap the big five AdSense reports you should start with to analyze your overall account performance.

Let's take a look at these reports.

1. The reporting dashboard: Get an overall summary of your performance

As the name suggests, the reporting dashboard gives you a quick summary of three main reporting metrics: estimated earnings, page views, and revenue per thousand impressions (RPM).

This report is a great way to get a quick check of your recent AdSense performance. You can switch to a wider date range, too, like the past month or year. If you see a sudden change in your results for any area, you can see a more detailed report with a click on the View report button.

2. The entire account by day report: Monitor your daily performance

To see this report, visit the Performance reports tab, click Common reports on the left-hand panel and then select Entire account by day.

Use the Entire account by day report to analyze your daily performance. Try selecting estimated earnings, impressions, CTR, and impression RPM to view them all at the same time and get a better idea of why your earnings change over time.

For example, if the drop in estimated revenue is mainly due to a drop in CTR, take a closer look at ad units and ad placement to understand what caused that CTR drop.

3. Ad units + Platforms: Check ad performance by device

To use this report, visit the Performance reports tab, click Common reports on the left-hand panel, select Ad units and then add Platforms from the top as a secondary dimension.

This combination offers a good look at how your ad units are doing on different device types. Maybe every ad is doing great across the board, or maybe some ad units are doing well on desktop but not on mobile (or vice versa).

CTR and Active View Viewable are two key metrics to check first. Active View Viewable shows how many of your total measurable impressions were truly viewable. Google considers an ad viewable if 50% of the ad is visible for at least one second*. With some impressions, for instance, the visitor may not scroll down your page to see an ad.

If an ad unit has an active view percentage below 50%, check the ad's placement and try to improve this.

Hungry to learn even more? Take it one step further by filtering the report for any individual ad unit that you would like to analyze.

4. The Platforms report: Compare platforms

The Platforms report enables you to see which devices your ad units were viewed on, for example, on desktop or mobile. You can see and compare the traffic and estimated revenue coming from any platform. If there’s a big discrepancy between these two, you might want to check the desktop ad placement and find ways to optimize it to close the revenue gap as much as you can.

5. The Sites report: Compare different domains

Manage multiple domains in your AdSense account? The Sites report can compare the overall performance of those domains.
If you have different versions of one site (like one for desktop and one for mobile), you'll see them separately. If you have a responsive site you can add Platforms as a secondary report dimension to analyze your mobile and desktop performance separately.

Start with these big five and you'll be getting a good basic view of how your site is running. Most of these reports can be found in the Common reports section under your Performance reports tab. You can also create your own reports and save them to run later.

New AdSense performance reports deliver quick and easy insights

Your performance reports are the key to gaining insights into how much you're earning and what impacts those earnings. To give you quick and easy access to these reports, we’ve introduced a new design for AdSense reporting with a new dashboard.
Fig 1. New Performance reports tab
With the redesigned Performance tab, you now have more control and flexibility, allowing you to better understand your AdSense earnings and performance. Some of the highlights of the new performance reports include:
  • Easier analysis: Get deeper insights by adding, changing or removing dimensions with the simple, redesigned dimension selector.
  • Simple metrics: Better understand your earnings with the redesigned metric families. We've designed metric families to group related reporting metrics and separate the different ways you make money from ads. For instance, the Clicks metric family includes metrics that relate to the CPC bid type.
  • Flexible reporting: Configure your filters the way you want. You can now apply multiple filters to your reports with the redesigned multiple filtering. For instance, you can now filter your Ad sizes report by both the country and platform dimension.
Fig 2. New reporting dashboard
To give you a centralized view of your account’s performance, we’ve also built a new reporting dashboard. With the new reporting dashboard, you can:
  • Access your top performance metrics: Switch easily between three key performance metrics: Estimated earnings, pageviews, and page RPM.
  • Understand what’s driving your key metrics: Analyze your top performance metrics by five different dimensions: Time, top platforms, top countries, top channels, and top sites.
  • Perform detailed analysis: View more detail for any report in the dashboard by clicking on “View report.”
To see your new AdSense reporting design and reporting dashboard, opt in below. Alternatively, you can opt in from within the Performance reports tab in your AdSense account.
Start using new AdSense reporting today and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Creating new ad units just got easier

Creating new ad units for your site can take time, especially when deciding on their look and style. Save time on this process with the new, simplified My ads tab in your AdSense account. From today, it’s quicker and easier to create new ad units, giving you more time to concentrate on optimizing your ad space.
In addition to simplifying the ad unit creation process, we’ve also refreshed the user interface for this page, making it more intuitive and easier to navigate. When choosing from the various options for your new ad units, we’ll help you in your final decision by highlighting the potential impact of your choices. Once you’ve decided on the best ad style, you can quickly implement this across your entire site rather than having to apply changes on an ad unit level.

Finally, to help enhance the look of ads on your site, we’ve made some changes to the default color palette for our text ads. The URL link will now display in a light gray replacing the green color previously associated with it.

It's important to note that these new features will not cause any changes to the way your existing ads appear on your site. For more information on the ad unit creation process, visit our Help Center. We hope the new My ads page will help make the ad unit creation process a quicker and more impactful experience for you. Share your feedback and suggestions over on our Google+ page.

Get the right insights quickly with the new AdSense homepage

As the first thing you see when you log into your AdSense account, your homepage is an important source of information on how your site is performing. We know it’s essential that this page gives you access to the most relevant and actionable information possible. With this in mind, we’ve been gathering and closely analyzing your feedback; today, we’re happy to share our newly-designed homepage and invite you to give it a try!

Some publishers have let us know that they want more insights from Google on ways to increase revenue, while others who log in to their accounts throughout the day want to be able to quickly access the right performance data. The new homepage has been designed to give you easier access to our recommendations and insights, not only to increase your monetization but also improve the user experience on your site. At the same time, it emphasizes the key information you need to know and any immediate actions to take.

Here are some of the main enhancements you can expect to see:
  • The new Insights stream on the right-hand side of the page provides personalized recommendations for your account, such as monetization opportunities and tips to enhance user experience, which can be put into action in just a few clicks.
  • Your key account stats for today are quick and easy to view and now provide comparison data such as earnings so far this month versus the same period last month.
  • The new Performance Today section gives you quick access to more detailed information like your countries and platforms reports, without requiring additional clicks.
  • Your Scorecard will continue to be prominent on your homepage, providing quick benchmarking information on how your site is performing relative to the sites of other AdSense publishers.

Try out the new homepage directly from your account. You’ll still be able to revert back to your old homepage layout if needed. We encourage you to share your feedback on these updates with us so we can continue to improve the homepage for you. Head over to our AdSense +page to let us know if you’ve enabled the new homepage, and stay tuned for additional account improvements we’re working to develop.

Stay on top of AdSense program policies with new notifications in your account

Our AdSense program policies are defined to ensure we all preserve a healthy ecosystem for users, advertisers and other publishers, and compliance with these policies is an absolute must for every publisher. We’ve heard your requests for more accessible information on policy issues and we’re happy to tell you that we are launching an additional policy notifications feature directly in your AdSense account. This will help you to quickly understand and address any potential policy issues.

Going forward, if our system detects a policy violation, you’ll receive both an email and an account notification with a link to view more details. Under the Policy violations section on the home tab, you can quickly access important information including details on each violation, the issue ID and an example of the violation on your site. The page will also include details on the action you need to take to resolve the violation.

We’ll be gradually rolling out this new feature over the coming weeks to all publisher accounts.  We hope that it helps you quickly identify and resolve any potential issues so you can focus on growing your business with AdSense. Please remember that as before, you'll need to ensure all of your sites comply with our policies. In addition to checking your account for any notifications, be sure to regularly review your sites for compliance with our policies.

Thanks for your continued feedback and suggestions on how we can continue improving AdSense for you. Please continue to share them on our AdSense +page and if you’d like more details on this new feature, visit our Help Center.

Understand and improve your site’s performance with the new publisher scorecard

We regularly hear that you look to us for benchmarking information on how your site is performing relative to the sites of other AdSense publishers. If you tuned in to yesterday’s Hangout on Air, you heard Susan Wojcicki talk about a future where AdSense does more of the heavy lifting for your ads, so you can focus on creating great content. Today, we’re happy to introduce the publisher scorecard, a new benchmarking feature in your AdSense account.

The scorecard can be found on the Home tab of your account and provides you with a summary of how well your ad settings, webpages and content are performing relative to other AdSense publishers. It’s organized into different categories, such as revenue optimization and site health, with each category scored on a scale of one to five blue dots indicating your performance.
You can further understand your performance and the steps you can take to improve it by following the suggestions and improvement tips in each category. Items that you should fix will be flagged by a red or yellow exclamation mark and once fixed, may help to increase your traffic and/or revenue. You’ll also be able to see updates to your score as you make improvements. In case you’re wondering if Google will take any action on low scores, the answer is no - this in an informational tool only to give you greater insights into how your site is performing.

We hope you find the scorecard a valuable tool in maximizing user experience on your site and further growing your online business. Read more about the scorecard in our Help Center and share your feedback on the AdSense +page.
